We Are Bringing Edutainment Back!

“Bunny Pop Press is a fully independent creative-owned digital comic books publisher. As a creative book publishing company, we intend to guide creative minds throughout the publishing process from editorial meetings to marketing and actual publication. To cut directly to the core, the sole purpose and reason for the Press’s existence is to give the next generation of writers and artists the tools and platform to succeed in their chosen craft. Bunny Pop Press ultimately is here to help.

Company/EiC Bio:

Bunny Pop Press (or The Press) officially began operations in the summer of 2018; however, the Press was established in 2011. The true origins of Bunny Pop Press, much like any great protagonist in a serialized story, is laid and deep-rooted. The humble beginnings of the Press date to an era of high-top fades and conscious rap on the radio.

Journey Of Bunny Pop Press As A Comic Book Publisher:

In 1992, Michael Q. Boyd, like a lot of 80s babies that were redesigned through the 90s, realized that “comic books and hip-hop were [his] genesis.” With his passion ignited for comic books, Michael’s fascination with the characters and their stories went beyond that of an avid reader and fan. Michael wanted to be involved in the stories. No, there was no desire to be side-by-side next to his favorite characters, he yearned to stand next to comic book writers and artists. At 12, Michael realized he wanted to work in the comics industry.

Without realizing the importance of this life decision, the young man set off in pursuit of a career in comics. With no road map on how to break into the industry, Michael plotted his course. With a goal in mind, Michael turned his writing/English comprehension weaknesses into strengths finding his voice as a writer. With his special abilities identified, Michael took on various forms of training throughout the years to hone his skills like a certain dark knight detective.

His heroic journey took him through years of higher education where he obtained a B.A. in Creative Writing (Knox College) as well as an M.F.A. in Fiction Writing (Chatham University). Between training sessions within higher education, Michael also found himself running different support positions, from a simple proofreader/copy editor to an associate and/or assistant editor on various publishing projects.

With a near mastery of his abilities, having various forms of training and education that he received over the years, Michael organically stepped into the title role of editor-in-chief. The rise in status was also coupled with the “official” formation of the Press. Within the confines of grad school, a literary press (Bunny Pop Press) was born. However, the Press was not able to remain an infant for long as the condemned graduate school schedule forced rapid growth for the small independent press. Within a matter of months, Bunny Pop went from a few scribbled notes and loose Word documents to adhering to a publishing schedule and conversions with a printer about physical copies. Michael, determined to increase the upper limits of his abilities, pushed through the publishing trials and tribulations to publish a chat book of poetry (Tesoro: Reflection on Puerto Rico). Michael, and the Press, were ultimately validated by the fact that the chat book subsequently sold out of two print runs.

One would think that would have been the lightbulb moment for Michael: that he would get it. He did but he did not. Michael’s interest in the publishing side of writing was sparked, but as much as he enjoyed the process of putting together a book from ideas to print, his heart just was not into the idea of publishing strictly literary works of fiction. He stepped away from publishing for a bit and became a Creative Writing Professor to impart some of his knowledge and skills to the next generation. Michael taught creative writing courses on and off for several years and enjoyed the challenge, but at the end of the day he kept coming back to his love for comics, and what was possible in the publishing world. That is when it hit him, like getting struck by lightning in a forensics lab, Michael knew what must be done. Bunny Pop Press, much like Michael himself throughout the years, needed to achieve a secondary mutation. So ultimately what started as a class project morphed and reverted to the dream of a 12-year-old who simply wanted to be involved in comics.
